Medieval Bakery Build Log

This build came together much faster than I expected and went from concept to final build in just about three days time. It was also put together for the Summer Joust's gradients category. When I was originally brainstorming ideas for this category, this was one of the first ones that came to mind. I feel the tan, medium nougat and reddish brown work very well with a bakery aesthetic.

The concept art above served as the basis for many of the build choices I made. My first hurdle was choosing a base shape and style. My original plan was using bricks and plates stacked sideways for a smooth base, instead I opted for a simpler studded floor. I quickly began putting down parts with the brick oven.

I utilized brackets with reddish brown tiles to mark the border and ingot pieces from the PAB wall to decorate the oven. I also pulled out my Blinky Bricks lights to add something life to the flames. This build gave me the excuse to do some simple wall building with the help of some masonry bricks. Finally I added in a couple windows and a minifig. At this point I had a couple small builds that were starting to come together.

Next I built this small shelf, although I wasn't too happy with how far it bulged out. I made a couple of tweaks and stocked it with a bottle, some flour and a couple measuring cups.

Here is when things were really starting to take shape. I added in most of the final touches and found a great use for the medium nougat barrels I recently purchased. I added in a table with a candelabra and cloth (a combination that while unsafe looks pretty great). I wasn't too happy with the floor though, I wanted a cleaner look and spent some time brainstorming. I was almost about to use tan ingots to decorate the floor but I realized this would not work well for an interior.

I ended up using reddish brown to tile the floor and remade the table in medium nougat to prevent it from blending in with the floor. Overall I'm extremely happy with how this build turned out. There were many aha moment when parts came together perfectly as I had imagined. (Who knew wands would make such perfect candlesticks?)

Although I've found it tough to build MOCs for contests, I think it's a great way to build with rules and structure and it gives you the opportunity to improve. Often the hardest part of custom building is starting. I'm glad I persevered on this build, and hope to post more builds soon.
